Many people who line up waiting to perform a [shoujing] ceremony — cleansing a frightened child from bad spirits — at Taipei’s Xingtian Temple often have to wait 20 to 40 minutes. While they wait, they will play with their cell phones to while away the time. Now, however, the temple authorities have decided that devotees cannot use their cell phones while lining up. They must also remain quiet and refrain from eating in order to show their sincerity and respect for the gods. Devotees have responded in different ways to these new regulations, and some have wondered if playing with their cell phone really is a sign of insincerity.
According to a news report on the TVBS news station, the temple authorities have expressed a hope that while they are waiting, devotees will avail themselves of the opportunity to calm their mind and engage in contemplation, adding that this will make the gods feel their sincerity even more strongly.
