Taiwan on Sunday recorded their second 10-run mercy-rule victory at the Little League Baseball World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, over a team from Texas in the third-place playoff.
One day after their one-hit defeat to Curacao, the team from Taoyuan’s Guishan Elementary School rebounded at the plate, producing two five-run innings on 10 hits to roll over Needville Little League in four innings.
Two-way star Fan Chen-jun (范宸竣) had one more highlight reel as he delivered both at the plate and on the mound.

Following two consecutive hits by Wu Yun-hsi (吳昀熹) and Chen Kai-sheng (陳鎧笙) in the bottom of the first inning, Fan, the third player at the plate, sent a line drive to left field to put his team on the board early.
Fan came to the plate again in the third inning. With runners on second and third bases, the 12-year-old made a big swing on a high breaking ball, sending it to deep center field for a three-run blast and extending the lead to 8-0.
That was the second homer by Fan in the tournament and he was greeted at the home plate by the whole team.
Fan also hit two runs in Taiwan’s 6-0 perfect game against Canada on Aug. 17. No other Taiwanese Little Leaguer has lifted the ball over the fence this year.
Meanwhile, Fan struck out nine hitters and scattered four hits over four innings on 56 pitches en route to his second shutout game at the tournament, pitching at about 128kph.
He single-handedly handed Japan a no-hitter on Monday last week.
That speed, according to tournament broadcast partner ESPN, requires a Little League batter to react nearly as fast as a Major League Baseball player to handle a fastball, given the shorter distance between the mound and the home plate.
Three of the four hits Fan yielded came in the last frame, and there was a moment he seemed likely to surrender his first run in the game when D.J. Jablonski knocked a hit to center field with two runners on the bases and two outs.
However, Corbin Riddle, who was on second base, misjudged the situation and attempted to dash toward the home plate, before he found the hit was not deep enough and got tagged out by catcher Chen on his way back to third base.
After the game, Fan said he was glad to win third place, but it would have been better if they could have won the World Series.
Fan racked up four hits in 10 at-bats and led his team with seven RBIs in the tournament. In his four outings as pitcher, he recorded two wins and one loss, and nailed 26 strikeouts in 11-1/3 innings pitched while allowing only one earned run and one walk, finishing with a 0.53 ERA.
His extraordinary two-way performance has drawn comparisons to Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Angels’ Japanese mega star, but Fan told the Central News Agency that he is not that strong and still has much to learn from Ohtani.
Despite hoping to keep playing two-way, Fan said he prefers pitching to batting if he had to pick, because “it is fun to confront the batters.”
Lee Cheng-ta (李政達), manager of the team, said Fan has great physical talent, but is still a “12-year-old kid,” who needs to work on his stability. If the young player can learn more details like adjusting his mindset, Lee believes he has a bright future on the diamond.
Lee praised the players for doing their best in every single game, saying they learned a lot at the tournament and had a great childhood memory to cherish.
NO-LIMITS PARTNERSHIP: ‘The bottom line’ is that if the US were to have a conflict with China or Russia it would likely open up a second front with the other, a US senator said Beijing and Moscow could cooperate in a conflict over Taiwan, the top US intelligence chief told the US Senate this week. “We see China and Russia, for the first time, exercising together in relation to Taiwan and recognizing that this is a place where China definitely wants Russia to be working with them, and we see no reason why they wouldn’t,” US Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told a US Senate Committee on Armed Services hearing on Thursday. US Senator Mike Rounds asked Haines about such a potential scenario. He also asked US Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lieutenant General Jeffrey Kruse
FAST RELEASE: The council lauded the developer for completing model testing in only four days and releasing a commercial version for use by academia and industry The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) yesterday released the latest artificial intelligence (AI) language model in traditional Chinese embedded with Taiwanese cultural values. The council launched the Trustworthy AI Dialogue Engine (TAIDE) program in April last year to develop and train traditional Chinese-language models based on LLaMA, the open-source AI language model released by Meta. The program aims to tackle the information bias that is often present in international large-scale language models and take Taiwanese culture and values into consideration, it said. STUMPED: KMT and TPP lawmakers approved a resolution to suspend the rate hike, which the government said was unavoidable in view of rising global energy costs The Ministry of Economic Affairs yesterday said it has a mandate to raise electricity prices as planned after the legislature passed a non-binding resolution along partisan lines to freeze rates. Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) lawmakers proposed the resolution to suspend the price hike, which passed by a 59-50 vote. The Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) voted with the KMT. Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) of the KMT said the resolution is a mandate for the “immediate suspension of electricity price hikes” and for the Executive Yuan to review its energy policy and propose supplementary measures. NOVEL METHODS: The PLA has adopted new approaches and recently conducted three combat readiness drills at night which included aircraft and ships, an official said Taiwan is monitoring China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) exercises for changes in their size or pattern as the nation prepares for president-elect William Lai’s (賴清德) inauguration on May 20, National Security Bureau (NSB) Director-General Tsai Ming-yen (蔡明彥) said yesterday. Tsai made the comment at a meeting of the Legislative Yuan’s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee, in response to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Wang Ting-yu’s (王定宇) questions. China continues to employ a carrot-and-stick approach, in which it applies pressure with “gray zone” tactics, while attempting to entice Taiwanese with perks, Tsai said. These actions aim to help Beijing look like it has
