OpenAI said on Saturday that its agents had appropriated wiki sites as impromptu message boards, adding that more transparency was needed around such incidents.
The statement follows a Reuters report that a swarm of OpenAI agents had hijacked a communally edited German site earlier this year and used it as an avenue for cheating during tests and other rogue behavior.
The admission comes as artificial intelligence (AI) safety concerns intensify following a July incident in which OpenAI agents escaped a testing environment and breached the systems of AI platform Hugging Face, prompting calls from US lawmakers and researchers for stricter oversight of autonomous AI systems.

OpenAI officials learned of the German incident weeks ago but tried to keep it secret as executives grappled with the fallout from the breach at Hugging Face.
In a social media post, OpenAI said that it and other companies needed to be more transparent about incidents of unintended behavior by AI, often called “misalignment.”
“Our misalignment disclosure practices need to expand for this new phase of model capabilities,” OpenAI said, adding that the industry did “not yet have a clear standard for how to report misalignment that shows up during training, evaluation and deployment.”
OpenAI said that it was “working with dozens of government regulatory agencies worldwide on these issues.”
Separately, the Seattle Times and Newsday sued OpenAI and Microsoft Corp on Friday, alleging in federal court that the tech companies copied the newspapers’ journalism without permission to train their AI systems.
The suit in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York alleges that OpenAI and Microsoft scraped the newspapers’ Web sites, including content behind paywalls, and incorporated articles into datasets used to train and operate products including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI features.
The newspapers said the companies’ AI products can reproduce passages from their reporting, closely paraphrase articles and provide users with answers that reduce the need to visit their Web sites or buy subscriptions.
The Seattle Times and Newsday are seeking an order requiring the destruction of copies of their works as well as training datasets or AI models incorporating them.
The lawsuit echoes a case filed by the New York Times in 2023, which accused OpenAI and Microsoft of using millions of newspaper articles without permission to train OpenAI’s chatbot. The case is ongoing, and is one of dozens brought by copyright holders against tech companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic PBC and Meta Platforms Inc for misuse of material to train AI systems.

Silicon photonics would play a dominant role next year and make chip-level co-packaged optics (CPO) packaging possible, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) said yesterday. “For years, critics questioned the reliability of CPO.
