A grenade that exploded at an opposition rally in northeastern Bangladesh has killed a former finance minister and at least four other people while wounding about 100 others, doctors and reports said yesterday.
Former Finance Minister Shah Mohammad Kibria, who had just finished giving a speech at the rally, was wounded in the blast Thursday and died while on the way to a hospital, doctors said.
The attack occurred at an opposition Awami League rally in Habiganj district, 120km northeast of the national capital Dhaka on Thursday, the United News of Bangladesh said.
"There was a big bang as we were about to leave the rally. I saw several people screaming in pain," said Shahid Chowdhury, an opposition leader at the scene.
No one claimed responsibility for the attack.
The injured were taken to hospitals, some of them in serious condition, said Mansurddin Iqbal, a local reporter.
"The hospitals here are struggling to treat so many injured people," said Chowdhury.
A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed there was an explosion and casualties at the rally. He said senior police officials were at the site investigating.
The Awami League -- led by the country's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina -- called for a nationwide general strike to condemn the attack, the party said.
Hundreds of angry opposition members took to the streets in Habiganj town to protest, smashing vehicles and attacking shops, according to witnesses. Iqbal said authorities deployed extra security to try to prevent violence.
In August, a grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Dhaka killed 21 people and injured more than 300. Sheikh Hasina, who escaped unharmed, blamed the government for the blasts.
Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) is to visit Russia next month for a summit of the BRICS bloc of developing economies, Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi (王毅) said on Thursday, a move that comes as Moscow and Beijing seek to counter the West’s global influence. Xi’s visit to Russia would be his second since the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022. China claims to take a neutral position in the conflict, but it has backed the Kremlin’s contentions that Russia’s action was provoked by the West, and it continues to supply key components needed by Moscow for
Japan scrambled fighter jets after Russian aircraft flew around the archipelago for the first time in five years, Tokyo said yesterday. They then traveled north over the Pacific Ocean and finished their journey off the northern island of Hokkaido, it added. The planes did not enter Japanese airspace, but flew over an area subject to a territorial dispute between Japan and Russia, a ministry official said. “In response, we mobilized Air Self-Defense

The 87-year-old pontiff’s comments on the US presidential hopefuls came as he defied health concerns to connect with believers from the jungle of Papua New Guinea to the skyscrapers of Singapore. It was Francis’ longest trip in duration and distance since becoming head of the world’s nearly 1.4 billion Roman Catholics more than 11 years ago. Despite the marathon visit, he held a long and spirited
