Former New York Mets pitcher Nelson Figueroa, who spent two years playing for the Uni-President Lions, on Tuesday recalled his time in Taiwan and urged his fellow Americans to visit the nation for its tasty food and scenic views.
At a news conference in New York City on Tuesday to promote Taiwan Heritage Day at Citi Field, Figueroa recalled Taiwan’s night markets and tasty xiao long bao (小籠包), as well as the hospitality of its people.
He urged New Yorkers and other Americans to visit Taiwan to enjoy its beaches, historic cities and urban life.

Figueroa, who now works as a pre-game and post-game analyst for SportsNet New York (SNY), last month visited Taiwan at the invitation of the Tourism Bureau to shoot a series of videos to promote Taiwan’s tourist attractions.
The videos were made into a 10-part series, Returning to Taiwan, which started airing early this month on Wednesday nights on SNY.
Figueroa is scheduled to attend the Mets’ 12th Annual Taiwan Heritage Day on Sunday where he will introduce Taiwan and play the videos.
Figueroa played for the Uni-President Lions in 2007 and the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions in 2013 and 2014. He was selected as MVP of the Taiwan Series in 2007.
Starlux Airlines, Taiwan’s newest international carrier, has announced it would apply to join the Oneworld global airline alliance before the end of next year. In an investor conference on Monday, Starlux Airlines chief executive officer Glenn Chai (翟健華) said joining the alliance would help it access Taiwan. A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Tropical Storm Pulasan became the 14th named storm of the year at 9:25pm yesterday, the agency said. As of 8am today, it was near Guam traveling northwest at 21kph, it said.
