Japanese manga artist Hajime Isayama, whose popular debut series Attack on Titan sold more than 22 million copies worldwide, will visit Taiwan for the first time next year to meet his fans.

Isayama will hold an autograph session on Feb. 4 at the Taipei International Comics and Animation Festival, said Tongli Publishing Co, the Taiwanese publisher of his books.

Attack on Titan is about a world in which giant monsters called Titans randomly attack humans and about how humanity struggles against these predators. The first volume was released in 2010 and had reached 11 volumes as of August. The series, a regular on the New York Times manga bestseller list, have sold more than 1 million copies in Taiwan, Tongli Publishing said.

Isayama shot to worldwide fame after releasing the series, but the artist has also drawn criticism in neighboring Asian countries after the media reported that one of his characters is allegedly based on a general in the Japanese imperial army.

Japanese author Shiki Mizuchi and illustrator Kohada Shimesaba of the popular light novel series Dragonar Academy will also visit Taiwan for the first time to meet fans at the comic festival next year, the publisher said.

They will sign autographs on Feb. 6.

Dragonar Academy, about a boy who wants to raise a dragon, has sold more than 100,000 copies in Taiwan, the publisher said.

The 2014 Taipei International Comics and Animation Festival will take place from Feb. 4 to 8 at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall.
