Apple removes reference to Taiwan as PRC province

By Shih Hsiu-chuan  /  Staff reporter

Apple has updated the nation’s designation on its maps app, removing a previous description of it as “a province of China” and listing it as “Taiwan” in the wake of complaints by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ministry spokesperson Anna Kao (高安) said yesterday that Apple had “responded positively” to the protest against the “improper” designation of the nation.

Taiwan was referred to as “a province of China” on Apple Maps for iOS 7, the latest version of its mobile operating system, and the app for version 10.9 of OS X — Mavericks — the newest version of its Macintosh operating system.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco lodged its concerns and displeasure over the matter to the Cupertino, California-based company and demanded a correction be made as soon as possible, the ministry said on Tuesday.

The misrepresentation was first reported by the Chinese-language Liberty Times (the sister paper of the Taipei Times) on Sunday.

Kao declined to provide details about the ministry’s negotiations with Apple.

The public has played a major role in informing the ministry of cases where the nation has been improperly designated and the ministry has acted immediately to demand rectification, Kao said.

Kao said that the ministry expected the concerted efforts of the government and public to facilitate corrections of incorrect references to the country.
