Taipei is the 61st-most liveable city in the world, according to this year’s Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Liveability Rankings.

The Australian city of Melbourne tops the survey of 140 cities for the third consecutive year with a score of 97.5, followed by Vienna (97.4), Vancouver (97.3) and Toronto (97.2). The Canadian city of Calgary is in joint fifth place with Adelaide, Australia (96.6).

Rounding out the top 10 are Sydney (96.1), Helsinki (96.0), Perth, Australia (95.9), and Auckland, New Zealand (95.7).

Taipei obtained a score of 83.9, a gain of 2 points compared with five years ago, and is identified by the EIU as one of the 10 cities to record the most improved liveability scores over five years.

The report said conflict is responsible for many of the lowest scores, with the Syrian capital of Damascus falling to the bottom of the rankings.

Others at the bottom of the list include Tehran; Douala, Cameroon; Tripoli; Karachi, Pakistan; Algiers; Harare and Dhaka.
