Taiwanese designers won four “Best of the Best” awards and 42 Red Dot Awards at this year’s Communication Design competition in Germany.
The four Best of the Best awards were given to a packaging concept called “Tree in the World,” submitted by hair product manufacturer Hair O’right; a design by Shu-Te University showcasing the philosophy of origami; a packaging design called “Possibilities are endless,” and an illustration, both entered by Asia University.
Taiwanese entrants also received 42 Red Dot awards in a range of categories, including corporate design, packaging design, corporate publishing, typography, illustration, poster design, interface creation, mobile apps, and TV, film, cinema and animation.
Among the Taiwanese winners were designer Ray Yen (顏睿), and design agencies Proad Identity, Sparkly Identity Design, Victor Design Branding Corp, Cindy Wang Design Studio, AVerMedia Technologies Inc, Jamzoo Technology Co, Yeast Design Consultants and Animation Studio.
The “Red Dot Award: Communication Design” is hosted annually by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen and is geared toward creative minds from design agencies, companies with strong communications campaigns, freelancers and students.
This year, 6,812 entries from 49 countries were submitted to the competition and 503 concepts received Red Dot awards, while 72 won Best of the Best awards.
The 24 Red Dot jury members, who come from 12 countries, said this year’s winners showed that each industry has a unique potential for marketing innovation.
The winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Berlin on Oct. 18 and the winning designs will be exhibited in the German city on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20.
Taiwan is to receive the first batch of Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70 jets from the US late this month, a defense official said yesterday, after a year-long delay due to a logjam in US arms deliveries. Taiwan-Japan Travel Passes are available for use on public transit networks in the two countries, Taoyuan Metro Corp said yesterday, adding that discounts of up to 7 percent are available. Taoyuan Metro, the Taipei MRT and Japan’s Keisei Electric Railway teamed up to develop the pass. Starlux Airlines, Taiwan’s newest international carrier, has announced it would apply to join the Oneworld global airline alliance before the end of next year. In an investor conference on Monday, Starlux Airlines chief executive officer Glenn Chai (翟健華) said joining the alliance would help it access Taiwan. Chai said that if accepted, Starlux would work with other airlines in the alliance on flight schedules, passenger transits and frequent flyer programs. A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Tropical Storm Pulasan became the 14th named storm of the year at 9:25pm yesterday, the agency said. As of 8am today, it was near Guam traveling northwest at 21kph, it said.
