A businessman was shot in a building near the legislature in Taipei shortly before 1pm yesterday and was reported to be in stable condition at National Taiwan University Hospital.

Lee Shih-jen (李世仁), 55, is reportedly the chairman of a public relations firm that works with firms doing business in China.

He was shot twice in his left thigh and once in his right thigh about 12:50pm as he was waiting for an elevator on the ground floor of an office building on Zhenjiang Street, just 50m from the Legislative Yuan.

Police stepped up patrols in the area afterward the shooting.

Police said they were pursuing two suspects in the shooting.

A police investigator said shots to the legs were considered hallmarks of a warning by organized crime gangs and were not meant to be fatal.

Lee was returning to his office when he was attacked. After shooting Lee, the gunmen hailed a taxi and fled the scene.

A security guard at the building said one of the gunmen had been walking in the lane behind the building in the morning. The man was described as in his 20s, about 1.7m tall and dressed in black.
