President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) yesterday sent a letter of condolence to US President Barack Obama expressing shock and grief over a deadly school shooting in Connecticut that left 20 children and six adults dead.
In the letter, Ma extended his condolences to the families of the victims and said Taiwan stands with the American people during this time of sorrow, Presidential Office spokesman Fan Chiang Tai-chi (范姜泰基) said.
Ma also pledged Taiwan’s support of Obama taking swift and meaningful action to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies, Fan Chiang said in a statement.
Soon after the incident was reported, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contacted the American Institute in Taiwan to express its regret.
Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut was attacked on Friday by a heavily armed 20-year-old gunman, who killed 26 people, 20 of whom were children aged six or seven, reports said.
