About 27,000 students from Taiwan were enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the US last year, making Taiwan the fifth-largest source of foreign students in the country, an education organization reported on Monday.
China was the US’ largest source of foreign students last year with 158,000, up 22 percent from the previous year, according to the New York-based non-profit Institute of International Education.
The institute said a total of 723,277 foreign nationals studied in the US last year, up 5 percent from 2009, with China, India, South Korea, Canada and Taiwan the top five sources of students.
The University of Southern -California (USC) was the most sought-after US school among foreign students last year — and for the past decade — with 8,615 foreign nationals studying there, the institute said.
The USC maintains offices in Shanghai, Seoul, Bombay, Taipei and Mexico City.
Institute president and CEO Allan Goodman said some US students could be worried about losing out on education opportunities to foreign students because of the popularity of the US as an education destination.
However, Goodman said foreign students make up only 4 percent of all students at US undergraduate and postgraduate institutions, adding that Americans benefit from studying alongside foreign students.

Taiwanese should be mindful when visiting China, as Beijing in July is likely to tighten the implementation of policies on national security following the introduction of two regulations, a researcher said on Saturday. China on Friday unveiled the regulations governing the law enforcement and judicial activities of national security agencies. They would help crack down on “illegal” and “criminal” activities that Beijing considers to be endangering national security, according to reports by China’s state media.
