Female office workers look to the skies

BLUE-SKY THINKING:1111 Job Bank said many female workers are attracted to the job of flight attendant because they enjoy traveling and broadening their horizons

Three out of four white-collar female workers say they are interested in becoming flight attendants, but only one in four have taken any action to try and achieve their goal, a survey by an online job bank claimed.

1111 Job Bank said many people are attracted to the job of flight attendant because they enjoy traveling and broadening their horizons, while the salary is typically higher than that of office workers.

Conversely, respondents who said they had no interest in such a job said they were not confident in their foreign-language abilities or did not meet other requirements for the profession.

With stronger demand for travel across Asia, many companies in the tourism and hospitality industry — including airlines and hotels — are increasing their hiring, the job bank said.

The job bank was recently put in charge of recruiting international service staff in Taiwan for Macau hotels the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel, the Wynn Macau and the MGM Macau.

1111 Job Bank spokeswoman Charlene Chang (張旭嵐) said those who longed for international experience and had worked in the service industry in Taiwan were good candidates for such positions because the companies valued candidates with good service and social skills, as well as good Chinese-language abilities and the ability to learn quickly.

The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel, for example, plans to recruit 20 workers in Taiwan this year and is offering a handsome package of NT$64,000, which is well above the nation’s average monthly salary. Workers who have high emotional intelligence, are socially aware and have a warm personality and a passion for the hospitality industry are their top choice, Chang said.

The job bank said the positions had attracted more than 1,000 resumes and that so far about 100 job interviews had been held.

Similar recruitment drives will be organized in the next few months for other hotels, Chang said.

The job bank recommends that those who are interested in applying for such positions not only demonstrate good foreign-language abilities, but also highlight their ability to work under pressure, their passion for serving customers and their ability to perform well in stressful situations.

Dressing appropriately and personal grooming are also essential to a successful interview, the job bank said.
