A man jumped to his death yesterday at MRT Ximen Station in Taipei City, causing delays of the trains on the MRT Blue Line.
According to the police division of Taipei City’s Department of Rapid Transit Systems, the man, who was in his 60s, entered the station at about 10am yesterday. He jumped off the platform and was hit by an incoming train at 10:17am.
A total of 36 trains and 14,000 passengers were affected by the incident, with only one track operational between Ximen Station and Shandao Temple Station. The Blue Line resumed normal services at about 12:25pm, police said.
Yesterday’s death occurred only 13 hours after another incident on the city’s MRT system.
A man died on Saturday night after jumping off the platform at Taipei City Hall Station and being hit by an incoming train at 9:58pm, causing the suspension of services on the Blue Line.
The line resumed operations at 10:52pm.
Lin Chi-yao (凌啟堯), director of Taipei Rapid Transit Corp’s public relations division, said the company was in the process of installing automatic platform doors at major MRT stations, including Taipei City Hall Station, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station and Yuanshan Station, to prevent such incidents.
The company has already installed such doors at Taipei Main Station and Zhongxiao Fuxing Station.
Lin said platform doors would be installed at all the stations on the Xinzhuang and Luzhou extension lines, which are expected to start operations next year and later this year respectively.
