Government officials warned teenagers yesterday to watch out for scammers while looking for part-time jobs during the summer vacation.
The National Youth Commission and the Council of Labor Affairs (CLA) held a press conference to advise teenagers on areas in which they should exercise caution when looking for summer work.
National Youth Commission Minister Wang Yu-ting (王昱婷) said many scams use recruitment as a ruse and that young people often fall victim to signing restrictive contracts, paying money as deposits or even being forced to purchase the goods they are hired to sell. Some are also asked to hand over their ID cards or other credentials.
Wang said teenagers should check out the companies beforehand, go to interviews early to check for unusual happenings and to go accompanied by someone they trust.
Scams have also been reported where parents receive “ransom” phone calls from fake kidnappers while their children are kept unreachable during fake job interviews.

A sharp rise in compensation to be paid by air force officers who leave before completing their required service could indicate an increase in pilots leaving the military early, an analyst said on Friday, warning that the trend could worsen a shortage of experienced personnel.
