Several cities and counties are taking advantage of their favorable locations for watching sunrises to host activities on New Year’s Day in their administrative regions.
The Central Weather Bureau said the first rays of sunlight in the coming year would appear at about 6:30am.
KENDING
Hotel operators in Kending (墾丁), Pingtung County, which is known for its scenic tropical coast, have designed tour packages featuring a sunrise tour in the county’s scenic Jialeshui coastal park.
Kending’s Sheding Nature Park, from which the ocean can be viewed, has been touted as a good place to watch the first sunrise of the year.
At least three sunrise activities will take place in Taitung County, including an event held each year since 2000 at Taimali (太麻里), another at Sanhsientai (三仙台), to be held by the Tourism Bureau’s East Coast National Scenic Area Administration, and another at Daguanshan Tunnel on the Southern Cross-Island Highway.
HUALIEN
Seven Star Lake in Hualien City is also being touted as one of the best places to greet the first sunrise of next year, while several hotels in the area have devised bicycle tours to scenic routes in the area.
Meanwhile, a New Year’s Eve countdown concert will take place at Fulong Beach, Taipei County, as a prelude to a gathering to watch the sunrise there.
ALISHAN
At Alishan, Chiayi County, the “Alishan Sunrise Impression Concert,” which has been held annually since 2002, will begin at 6am as the sun is forecast to rise over the mountain resort at about 7am.
Following that, a series of performances by the Aboriginal Tsou tribe will be staged in the area, lasting for two days.
The Taipei Department of Health yesterday said it has launched a probe into a restaurant at Far Eastern Sogo Xinyi A13 Department Store after a customer died of suspected food poisoning. A preliminary investigation on Sunday found missing employee health status reports and unsanitary kitchen utensils at Polam Kopitiam (寶林茶室) in the department store’s basement food court, the department said.
