President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) passed his annual medical check with flying colors yesterday.
“He is in perfect shape,” Taipei Veterans General Hospital superintendent Lin Fang-yue (林芳郁) said.
Lin said that Ma was 178cm tall, weighed in at 71.2kg, giving him a body mass index (BMI) of 22.47. His body temperature measured 36.8°C and his pulse registered 53 beats per minute. His blood pressure reading was 118/80mmHg.
Lin made the remarks during a press conference after the president finished the day-long check-up, which began at 8am and finished at around 5pm. Presidential medical adviser Chang Heng (張珩) said that the hospital’s chief cardiac physician, Chan Wan-leong (陳雲亮), was in charge of yesterday’s check.
Talking about Ma’s recent weight loss, Chang said the president decided to lose weight in May when he weighed 82kg. He achieved the weight loss by exercising and eating less.
“The president’s caloric intake is approximately 1,600 calories a day, while he burns about 400 calories a day through his daily exercise,” Chang said.
The medical check included a computerized tomography of Ma’s chest and an MRI scan on his stomach.
“The president asked to skip several other parts of the test as he has completed a separate health check at National Taiwan University Hospital earlier this year,” Chan said.
The hospital’s Vice Superintendent Lee Chen-hsen (李建賢) said that Ma’s chronic knee injury was their only concern, and he suggested Ma strengthen his knee by performing simple exercises that can be done in his office.
