The first regional service center for foreigners in southern Taiwan was inaugurated in Tainan yesterday.
In a press release, Vice Minister of the Executive Yuan’s Research, Development and Evaluation Commission, Wei Kuo-yen (魏國彥), said the center would provide important tourism, investment, residency, medical, transportation, cultural and educational information and counseling to foreigners visiting and living in the Tainan area.
The center will also help soccer teams set up by foreigners to organize games, the commission said.
Wei said the center would primarily serve the approximately 30,000 foreigners living in Tainan City and County, adding that people doing alternative military service, college students with foreign language proficiency and others would serve as volunteers at the center to help with translation.
The center is the second information center of it type in Taiwan after the government established one in Hsinchu last year.
“Taiwan’s competitiveness depends on whether it can attract international talent. Many advanced countries such as Japan, [South] Korea and Singapore have also launched similar information centers to help foreigners feel at home,” Wei said.
