International students at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) outshone their Taiwanese counterparts in the university’s recent English business proposal competition.
An international team called “Ho Ho Ho,” claimed first prize by proposing a “stress relieving cafe.” The team comprised of NCKU International Masters of Business Administration (IMBA) student Ottavia from Indonesia, IMBA graduate student Chuluunbaatar Enkhbold from Mongolia and Institute of Creative Industry Design student Paramita Asri from Indonesia.
The proposed cafe would allow students to release their pressure and frustrations in numerous ways, including a games room where students could vent their frustrations by boxing, throwing bottles, inserting needles into voodoo dolls or covering walls with graffiti.
There would also be a burning room for customers of the cafe to burn bad memories or objects that reminded them of bad memories, the team said.
The team stood out from the 14 teams in last week’s English Business Proposal Contest — a competition for students to demonstrate their business creativity to attract potential investors.
A group called “Eagle United,” consisting of IMBA senior students John Qubti from Canada, Jonathan Kirkwood Dickerson from the US and two Taiwanese students, came in second. They proposed that NCKU’s English-speaking community teach English to local students on campus, the school said.
Qubti’s team also proposed that NCKU’s native English speakers help Taiwanese businesspeople in the Tainan area improve their English proficiency.
The Apex Solutions team led by NCKU’s IMBA student Martin Ortega-Azurduy from Bolivia won third place by proposing the creation of a radio-frequency identification (RFID) card for cellphones, the school said.

The incident occurred at 9:40am on Friday as the Ever Lunar was anchored and waiting to enter the Port of Callao when it suddenly experienced severe rolling, Evergreen said in a statement. The rolling, which caused the containers to fall, might have been caused by factors including a tsunami triggered by an earthquake in Russia, poor winter sea conditions in South America or a sudden influx of waves,

STAY VIGILANT: People should reduce the risk of chronic liver inflammation by avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and eating pickled foods, the physician said A doctor last week urged people to look for five key warning signs of acute liver failure after popular producer-turned-entertainer Shen Yu-lin (沈玉琳) was reportedly admitted to an intensive care unit for fulminant hepatitis. Fulminant hepatitis is the rapid and massive death of liver cells, impairing the organ’s detoxification, metabolic, protein synthesis and bile production functions, which if left untreated has a mortality rate as high as 80 percent, according to the Web site of Advancing Clinical Treatment of Liver Disease, an international organization focused on liver disease prevention and treatment. People with hepatitis B or C are at higher risk of
