Two police officers who answered a call to help a man whose car had swerved off the road yesterday in Cishan Township (旗山), Kaohsiung County, ended up arresting the driver after they found a large amount of drugs in his car.
The man suffered only minor injuries in the accident and managed to get out of the car, which had flipped and landed upside down after careening off the road.
The man, surnamed Wang, was sitting on the side of the road when the two police officers arrived in a police car, but tried to run away when one of the officers spotted something suspicious in the wrecked car and approached the man to talk to him about it.
When an officer tried to prevent him from running away, the man pulled out a gun and shot at the officer, but he missed and was quickly overpowered by the two officers.
A thorough search of his car yielded 855.44g of heroin, 945.4g of amphetamine, a set of electronic scales, drug paraphernalia, two handguns, 64 bullets, four cellphones, 54 NT$500 consumer vouchers and NT$488,700 in cash, the police said.
The vouchers and cash were suspected to be takings from sales of the illicit goods, the police said.
The man was referred to local prosecutors for further investigation.
