The nation's envoy to this year's APEC summit arrived in New York on Monday, where he is to spend three nights before continuing on to Peru, where the meeting will be held from Saturday to Sunday.

Former vice president Lien Chan (³s¾Ô) was greeted by Jason Yuan (°K°·¥Í), Taiwan's Representative to the US, and Liao Kang-min (¹ù´ä¥Á), director of Taiwan's liaison office in New York, at Newark International Airport.

Speaking at the airport, Lien told reporters that Taiwan is a rapidly developing economy that can contribute significantly to APEC, an organization dedicated to regional economic development.

He said that the APEC leaders' meeting would discuss a wide range of issues, including the global financial crisis, the environment, food and human safety, energy and climate change.

Taiwan will give practical and concrete opinions during the talks if they are needed, Lien said.

Asked about his expected contact with Chinese President Hu Jintao (JÀAÀÜ) during the two-day summit, Lien said he ¡§will exchange opinions with Hu on cross-strait economic and trade issues, and other issues, if there is time.¡¨
