Dating can sometimes be heart-breaking, but a college girl at Chung Yuan Christian University recently learned it can be leg-breaking as well.
Hua Yu-tien (花有田), an instructor at the university, told reporters yesterday that the girl, a freshman in the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, broke her dormitory’s 11pm curfew to go on a date with a fellow student on Oct. 20.
The girl jumped out of a window on the second floor of the dormitory, 5m above the ground, but her date failed to catch her and she ended up breaking both legs, the instructor said.
The Liberty Times (the Taipei Times’ sister newspaper) reported yesterday that the boy, surnamed Su, moved at the last minute because he was afraid he would not be able to catch his date.
The girl was rushed to an emergency room at a Jhongli City, Taoyuan County, hospital near the school, where doctors said she had sustained open fractures in both legs.
None of the students informed the school of the accident or reported it to the police, the newspaper reported.
Another university instructor, Lo Tien-chang (羅添昌), said it was common for male students to deliver late-night snacks to female classmates at their dormitories after the curfew, but no students had ever jumped out of the building while trying to break curfew.
