With the 2009 World Games approaching, Kaohsiung City Government is expected to complete 150km of bicycle trails by the end of this year, the city’s Public Works Bureau said yesterday.
The bureau said in a press release that the city government had completed several high quality bike trails, including the “Cijin (旗津) Ocean-view Bike Path,” the “Bike Path System Connecting Love River and the Lotus Pond,” the “Houjin Creek (後勁溪) Bike Path,” the “West Side Harbor Line Bike Path,” the “Bo-Ai Landscape Roadway (博愛世運大道),” the “Formosa Boulevard” and the “Cianjhen River (前鎮河) Bike Path.”
With the newly built Jhongjheng Road Bike Path, the city now boasts about 130km of trails, the bureau said, adding that the city government aimed to add another 70km of trails by the end of next year.
Several of the bike trails cover many of the city’s major attractions, the bureau said.
One of the bureau’s recommendations was the path connecting Love River and the Lotus Pond as it passes through the city’s historical, cultural and ecological attractions, such as True Love Pier (真愛碼頭), the outdoor cafes along the river, the Kaohsiung Museum of History, the Kaohsiung Film Archive, the Chungtu Pottery Factory (中都窯場), the Love River Wetlands, the Neiweipi (內惟碑) Wetland and the Lotus Pond.
The bureau said it was also planning to build a bicycle path around the Fengshan Reservoir and a biking system connecting the city’s waterfront landscape and downtown Kaohsiung.
