The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said yesterday it had handed over to police authorities a postcard threatening that harm would come to former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and his family if he did not retract his accusations against Su An-sheng (蘇安生).
Chen has filed a lawsuit against Su, who is believed to have kicked him in the posterior on June 21 as the former president was entering the Taipei District Court for a court hearing.
DPP Department of Culture and Information Director Cheng Wen-tsang (鄭文燦) told reporters yesterday the author of the postcard said Chen must withdraw his charges against Su and apologize for the move, otherwise he would kill Chen, his daughter Chen Hsing-yu (陳幸妤) and her husband Chao Chien-ming (趙建銘).
The postcard also threatened to hurt DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), Cheng said.
“I saw the postcard and I am confident our security apparatus can handle this kind of thing,” Tsai told reporters yesterday, adding she would not change her schedule over the matter.
65 year-old Su is a member of the pro-unification Patriot Association (愛國同心會).
Chen Shui-bian appeared in court on June 21 to defend himself in a defamation suit brought by personnel connected to the purchase of Lafayette frigates in 1990.
After the hearing, he went to the National Taiwan University Hospital, where doctors found that his tailbone had been fractured in the assault.
Approached for comments yesterday, Su said that he had not sent any threatening letter to the DPP.
