The Tainan County Government has transformed the sports park in front of its office building into a more environmentally friendly park that will please a wide range of visitors, a county official said yesterday.
The park, dubbed “Green City in Tainan County,” is a step toward the county’s goal of creating a green homeland for residents and Is equipped with a solar energy system to provide night-lights in the area, the official said.
Renovation started in late 2004 and was completed in January 2006 at a cost of more than NT$500 million (US$16.45 million), the official said. A tennis court, basketball court and croquet field were moved to a nearby gym in order to create more green open space, the official said.
The modern design of the solar power generation system has become a landmark as well as serving as an exit for an underground parking lot, the official said.
The renovated park won the 2007 Taiwan Estate Excellence Award for its concept of offering visitors a chance to enjoy the beauty of nature while learning about environmental protection, the official said.
The park is located on a site that housed a shrine during the Japanese colonial period, and what is now the underground parking lot was once an air-raid shelter.
The facilities include chessboards and stone benches, an outdoor square for public events and a water play area for children.
Colorful installation art projects, inspired by the endangered Formosan spotted deer, are dotted around the park.
The county government has used a variety of events, including flea markets, flower shows and children’s games to attract visitors to the park, the official said.
