The Taipei District Court yesterday sentenced Peng Sheng-lu (´^²±ÅS), who ran over a TV cameraman on Dec. 6, to five years and six months in jail.
The incident occcurred as supporters and opponents of the government¡¦s decision to alter the plaque at National Taiwan Democracy Hall clashed near the memorial.
¡§The defendant has been cooperative since the first hearing and he has reached an agreement to pay NT$300,000 [US$10,000] in compensation to the victim, ETTV cameraman Wang Jui-chang [¤ý·ç¼ý]. The court therefore sentences him to five years and six months in jail,¡¨ the verdict read.
Peng was charged with attempted murder, but he never admitted to the crime during the trial. In their indictment on Jan. 25, prosecutors had asked for seven years and six months.
Peng has 20 days to appeal.
A video broadcast on ETTV showed Peng driving toward two Taiwan Independence Union members who were standing by their cars arguing with protesters in front of the memorial hall across the street. The video showed Peng stopping just in front of the men. As the pair approached the truck and started to shout at the driver, the truck started moving again.
The verdict said that Peng had admitted to his actions, but never admitted that he attempted to kill anyone.
