The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will hold a debate in Kao-hsiung a week before the election for party chairman on May 18, with young people and the general public invited to participate.
Three candidates are running in the election: former vice premier Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), DPP Legislator Chai Trong-rong (蔡同榮) and former senior presidential adviser Koo Kwang-ming (辜寬敏).
Yen Sheng-kuan (顏聖冠), director of the DPP’s Culture and Information Department, said that only one debate will be held, on May 10, before the election. Details of the debate will be discussed during the next round of negotiations on Monday.
The meeting yesterday was chaired by DPP Deputy Secretary-General Lan Shih-tsung (藍世聰). Chai attended, while Koo and Tsai sent their representatives.
Yen said Chai had hoped to hold more than one debate, but that Koo and Tsai agreed to hold only one.
During the 145-minute debate, the three candidates will first present their platforms, then take questions from four designated persons before making their closing remarks.
The party will hold two rounds of selection from a pool of 20 candidates, with the party recommending 11 people and the three candidates proposing three each.
DPP Chairman Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) said yesterday that he hoped to see more people participate in the party’s chairmanship election.
Hsieh encouraged the public, especially young people, to file their questions via e-mail (less than 200 words) or video (about one minute) before May 1.
They can send their questions to dppyouth@hotmail.com

Former president Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Monday called for greater cooperation between Taiwan, Lithuania and the EU to counter threats to information security, including attacks on undersea cables and other critical infrastructure. In a speech at Vilnius University in the Lithuanian capital, Tsai highlighted recent incidents in which vital undersea cables — essential for cross-border data transmission — were severed in the Taiwan Strait and the Baltic Sea over the past year. Taiwanese authorities suspect Chinese sabotage in the incidents near Taiwan’s waters, while EU leaders have said Russia is the likely culprit behind similar breaches in the Baltic. “Taiwan and our European
