The Taipei County Government, in cooperation with the Taipei Rapid Transit Corp (TRTC), will establish the nation’s first CPR-certified facility and install automatic external defibrillators (AED) in order to upgrade the level of medical services available to MRT passengers.
The Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services Chief Chang Kuan-wu (張冠吾) said that to start off they would assist the TRTC in obtaining CPR certification for staff in Banciao and 20 other MRT stations in Taipei County.
A total of 40 AED stations would also be installed at MRT station exits.

A TRTC employee said that beginning in the middle of this month staff at 20 stations would receive CPR training with the goal of obtaining Instructor certification. AEDs would be installed by October at the latest, thereby strengthening the MRT system’s emergency services network.

Taipei County Hospital Chief Shen Hsi-che (沈希哲) praised the project and said that it could raise the survival rate for heart disease patients that undergo out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
Shen also called on the agencies involved to provide frontline staff with adequate training so that they would be familiar with emergency rescue techniques and the proper usage of the AEDs.
Fire Department Chief Huang Te-ching (黃德清) said that beyond CPR certification, the Consumer Protection Commission and other consumer advocacy groups hoped to upgrade the act of taking public transportation to that of a contractual obligation so that riders of all ages would have medical service guarantees.
