Post-Election 2008: Chen and Lu offer congratulations to Ma and Siew

President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) sent messages of congratulations to Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) president-elect Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and vice president-elect Vincent Siew (蕭萬長) on the heels of the pair's victory in Saturday's election.

Chen said in a statement that the government will do its utmost to maintain political stability and assist in completing the power transfer to the 12th president and vice president before May 20, when the new president will be sworn in.

In the statement, Chen and Lu praised the candidates of both the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the KMT for setting a democratic model for the country during the election process despite the fierceness of the competition between them.

The election went smoothly, an illustration of the maturity of Taiwan's democratic politics and of the fact that the people are well-equipped for democracy, the statement said.
