Premier Chang Chun-hsiung (張俊雄) yesterday said all toll stations on major freeways would not collect fees on March 22, the day of the presidential election.
He made the remarks in response to a request made by Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) when they attended the opening ceremony of the Taiwan National Women's Hall yesterday, coinciding with the celebration of International Women's Day around the world.
"We will act on the vice president's directive," Chang said.
Lu made the suggestion when asked to comment on the stance a taxi driver association has taken on the presidential candidates fielded by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT).
The association, known for its pro-DPP stance, recently claimed that members were unhappy that the DPP presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate had not visited in the past three years and said it would organize a rally to support the KMT ticket.
Lu dodged the question from reporters by suggesting that Chang was considering her proposal, saying that providing toll-free service on major freeways on election day would smooth the way for the public to make their way home by taxi to cast ballots.
"The Executive Yuan should think about [my suggestion], which is not a matter in favor of the pan-blue camp or the pan-green camp," Lu said.
