The Ministry of Education announced that it will launch an eight-stage "Ocean, Energy Conservation, Health" activity to encourage students to exercise more and to urge people to save energy.
The first stage would see Minister of Education Tu Cheng-sheng (杜正勝) lead a group of sports volunteers on a bicycle tour from Taipei City to Luotong Township (羅東) in Ilan County, with stops at several schools along the way, MOE officials said yesterday.
The tour would enable the education minister to gain a better understanding of the state of the nation's education system at a grass-roots level, the officials said.
The bicycle tour is set to start at National Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall's Liberty Square today. Tu is scheduled to stop at Shihmen Elementary School in Taipei County and have lunch with teachers and students.
He will then proceed to Liendong Elementary School in Keelung City, where he will take part in an informal discussion with faculty and pupils, the officials said.
Tu came up with the idea of a round-the-nation cycling tour during a bike trip along the east coast, the officials said.
Seeing the beautiful natural scenery of the region, Tu thought a round-the-nation bicycle trip would be a great way to encourage students to exercise more, advocate energy conservation and gain a deeper understanding of the state of education on the ground.
The second stage will see Tu cycle along the Suhua Highway to Hualien City, where he will visit the Digital Opportunities Center to gain a better understanding of its operations, the officials said.
