Military prosecutors yesterday said they believed Military Police Captain Lu Tseng-hsiang (陸增祥) committed suicide because of his troubled love life.
"The coroner's report showed that Lu took his own pistol in his right hand and shot himself in the right temple. Investigation of Lu's cellphone record and his relationships have given us good reason to believe that he was suffering from problems in his personal life," a press release from the Military Prosecutors' Office said.
The press release said the prosecutors had conducted interviews with witnesses and reviewed footage taken from a closed-circuit video system. Lu was witnessed sitting inside the guard booth with blood streaming from his temple after a loud "bang" was heard.
Lu's body was examined by military coroner Wu Mu-jung (吳木榮) but the Military Prosecutors' Office would not confirm whether an autopsy had been performed.
Military prosecutors also said that Lu did not have any outstanding debts and he had an exemplary work record. His last cellphone conversation and text message -- both to his girlfriend -- were the only explanation for his suicide, the statement said.
The 27-year-old military police captain was a certified sniper. He was captured on local TV news footage during the National Day celebrations on Oct. 10 on the roof of the Presidential Office with a rifle in his hand.
