The legislature unfroze two Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) budget plans for this year yesterday after the ministry decided not to implement them.
Now that the two budget plans are unfrozen -- NT$166.66 million (US$5.14 million) for financing the development of an industrial park in El Salvador and NT$8.17 million to remodel the headquarters of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy -- the money can be returned to the treasury, legislators said.
A ministry report submitted to the legislature said that the ministry decided to call a halt to the Salvadorean park plan after failing to reach agreement with the Salvadoran government on the location of the park.
The development of the park was initiated by Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) during a visit to Central America in 2005.
The ministry decided to drop the budget for remodeling the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy's building because the organization's new building will be with financing from another budget plan.
A third budget plan was defrosted yesterday -- NT$648.74 million for international cooperation projects -- but lawmakers demanded that the ministry submit a written report within two weeks explaining the budget and the amounts for individual projects.
