Around 30 percent of expatriates living in the US, Australia and Canada are considering returning to Taiwan, according to the results of a survey conducted by the Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission.
Commission officials provided the figure at a seminar sponsored by the Taoyuan Real Estate Development Association.
The survey results show that 33 percent of expatriates in the US are considering returning to Taiwan, while 31 percent said they were uncertain and 34 percent said they were not considering the idea.
Fifty-six percent of those who said they wanted to return said this was because of a desire to return to their roots. Another 14 percent cited Taiwan's medical care and 13 percent said they wanted to return home to pursue employment opportunities.
Of expatriates living in Australia, 33 percent said they were considering returning to Taiwan, compared with 47 percent who said that they were unsure and 20 percent who said they did not intend to move back.
Of expatriates in Australia considering returning, 39 percent said this was to pursue employment opportunities. Another 28 percent wanted to return to their roots and 18 percent hoped to start businesses in Taiwan.
Of those in Australia who did not want to return to Taiwan, more than half of them said this was because they had become accustomed to living there.
Thirty-three percent of expats in Canada said they were considering returning to Taiwan, compared with 20 percent who said they were unsure and 29 percent who said they did not intend to return.
Starlux Airlines, Taiwan’s newest international carrier, has announced it would apply to join the Oneworld global airline alliance before the end of next year. In an investor conference on Monday, Starlux Airlines chief executive officer Glenn Chai (翟健華) said joining the alliance would help it access Taiwan. A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Tropical Storm Pulasan became the 14th named storm of the year at 9:25pm yesterday, the agency said. As of 8am today, it was near Guam traveling northwest at 21kph, it said.
