A Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) delegation left for Washington yesterday to reassure the US that the KMT wants to develop peaceful relations with both China and the US. KMT vice presidential candidate Vincent Siew (蕭萬長) is leading the delegation.
The 12-day visit comes at a time when Taiwan-US ties have soured as a result of the Democratic Progressive Party government's plan to hold a referendum on joining the UN using the name "Taiwan" in tandem with the March 22 presidential election.
The US has warned that this is destabilizing to the cross-strait "status quo."
At a news conference on Sunday, Siew said KMT presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) had asked him to tell the US that the KMT is a peacemaker, not a troublemaker and would handle Taiwan-China-US ties appropriately.
