DAD DID IT: Gathered together for the first time, the defendants in the Rebar Group embezzlement scandal laid the blame squarely at Wang You-theng's door

The six children and younger brother of fugitive Wang You-theng (王又曾) put the knife into the former Rebar Group (力霸集團) chairman during a Rebar embezzlement scandal hearing at the Taipei District Court yesterday.

"Wang You-theng was the head of the group," said Wang Lin-chiao (王令僑), Wang You-theng's youngest son.

Wang You-theng and his wife Wang Chin She-ying (王金世英) are accused of embezzling billions of dollars from the Rebar Group before fleeing to China and then the US.

The Taipei District Prosecutors' Office placed the couple on the wanted list on Jan. 25. Arrest warrants for the couple are valid for 25 years.

Prosecutors are seeking a 30 year sentence and a fine of NT$1.71 billion (US$52.13 million) for Wang You-theng.

Wang's wife faces 28 years in prison and a NT$710 million fine if convicted.

The Taipei District Court began hearings for the case on April 2. Presiding Judge Lee Ying-hao (李英豪) separated the case into eight sections so that the court can examine each in detail.

Yesterday's hearing marked the first time that everybody involved in each of the eight mini-trials was summoned at the same time. As there were more than 200 people present, including the 79 defendants, their defense counsels and witnesses, the judges decided to hold the hearing in the Taipei District Court's auditorium instead of in a regular courtroom.

Gary Wang (王令麟), chairman of the Eastern Multimedia Group and Wang You-theng's son, told the judges he had simply done as he was told, acting on behalf of his father and helping him in every aspect of the business.

"He [Wang You-theng] made the decisions. I just followed them," Gary Wang said.

Wang Lin-i (王令一), another of Wang You-theng's sons, apologized on behalf of his father.

"He [Wang You-theng] was in charge of the entire operations of the group. I would like to apologize to anyone who was hurt by this case," Wang Lin-i said.
