Kaohsiung County officials responsible for health and environmental protection affairs were mobilized yesterday for an urgent undertaking aimed at preventing an outbreak of dengue fever.

County Commissioner Yang Chiu-hsiung (楊秋興) ordered officials to reinforce efforts to cleanse mosquito-breeding sites after the first indigenous dengue fever case this summer was reported last week.

The patient, a woman in her 50s, resides in Fengshan City but works in Kaohsiung, County Director of Health Huang Chih-chung (黃志中) said, noting that Kaohsiung City is one of southern Taiwan's dengue-affected areas, with 52 cases of indigenous dengue fever reported so far since the beginning of the summer.

Tainan is the area hardest hit by the mosquito-born disease, with 230 cases of indigenous dengue fever reported so far this summer.

Tainan County has reported 17 cases, Huang said.
