The Council of Labor Affairs has produced an ad calling on Taiwanese to show greater empathy toward foreign laborers, officials said yesterday.
The officials said the number of foreign workers stands at around 340,000, or almost 1.5 percent of the nation's population.
Because of cultural differences and misunderstandings, as well as resentment toward foreign workers for cutting into the local job market, the officials said there had been clashes between Taiwanese and foreigners.
The officials said that many locals regard foreign workers as low-class workers, forgetting that most of them are engaged in taxing, underpaid occupations, often with poor safety standards.
The ad, titled "Treating foreign laborers with empathy" features a village in Ben Tre Province, Vietnam, as well as scenes showing working conditions in Taiwan to portray the life of many foreign workers.
The ad aims at teaching locals more about the efforts and contributions of foreign workers, officials said.
The CLA has produced another ad to encourage people to report absconding foreign workers and illegal employers, they said.
Officials also said that some employers hire illegal foreign workers to cut costs, which results in problems for the workers.
Both ads will make their debut today.
