Eight college students from Costa Rica may continue their studies in Taiwan on scholarships provided by the Taiwanese government despite the recent termination of diplomatic ties between the two countries, said Lee Tian-hsiang (李天祥), vice president of Kung Shan University of Technology in Tainan County.
Lee said officials with the International Cooperation and Development Fund under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had expressed willingness to continue providing scholarships to the Costa Rican students at a recent meeting to discuss their status.
Before the meeting, the university had been prepared to offer its own scholarships to the Costa Rican students to enable them to complete their studies, Lee said.
Although Taiwan and Costa Rica last week severed their 63-year-old diplomatic partnership, fund officials said the Taiwanese government was poised to continue assisting the students and help them complete their academic pursuits in Taiwan as part of its efforts to maintain links between the private sectors of the two countries.
After learning the good news, the eight Costa Rican students held up banners and posters expressing their love for Taiwan, the fund and the university, vowing to do their best to help step up bilateral relations in the future.
