Yu, Hsieh won't oppose Olympic torch in Taiwan

Two presidential aspirants from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said on Thursday they would not oppose the inclusion of Taiwan in the torch relay for the Beijing Olympics next year as long as Taiwan's national sovereignty and dignity would not be compromised.

DPP Chairman Yu Shyi-kun and former premier Frank Hsieh (謝長廷), both of whom have announced plans to run in the DPP primary for next year's presidential election, made the remarks after a local newspaper reported that the Olympic Torch is very likely to pass through Taiwan.

Yu said if Taiwan was not regarded as a local government branch of China, he would welcome the inclusion of a Taiwan leg in the relay.

Hsieh said that he would throw his support behind the arrival of the torch provided that Taiwan's national status and dignity remained intact in the relay.
