Texted greetings increasingly popular ahead of holiday


The number of mobile messages recorded a year-on-year increase of more than 20 percent for the three days leading up to and and including the first day of the Lunar New Year, as sending mobile New Year greetings becomes increasingly popular.

A total of 19 million, 22.52 million and 24.98 million messages were sent via the Chunghwa Telecom mobile network two days before, the day before, and the first day of Lunar New Year respectively, company officials said.

The average number of mobile messages sent during these three days rose 49.5 percent compared with the same period last year, and the income generated from the messaging service for these three days amounted to approximately NT$90 million (US$2.72 million), the officials said.

Taiwan Mobile Co saw 31.18 million and 38.33 million mobile messages transmitted or received via its network on Lunar New Year's eve and Lunar New Year's day respectively, officials said.

The figures represent a rise of 20 percent and 24 percent respectively, over last year, they said.
