Government-provided services for the disabled varies wildly depending on the locality in Taiwan, the League of Welfare Organizations for the Disabled said yesterday.
"Not surprisingly, Taipei City, Taipei county and Kaohsiung City came out on top, as these are the municipalities with the most resources," the league's president Lin Chin-hsing (
"The current disparity in resource allocation is unacceptable," said Huang Min-jung, the league's head of research and devel-opment. "Each disabled child received NT$27,570 [last year] on average in Taipei, while in Chiayi county, the average goes down to NT$2,819 per child."
The rankings were based on statistics from last year for individual counties and municipalities, and take into account resources allocated for special education and welfare services, employment opportunities and the "disabled-friendliness" of the localities.

US climber Alex Honnold is to attempt to scale Taipei 101 without a rope and harness in a live Netflix special on Jan. 24, the streaming platform announced on Wednesday. Starting on Jan. 1, YouBike riders must have insurance to use the service, and a six-month trial of NT$5 coupons under certain conditions would be implemented to balance bike shortages, a joint statement from transportation departments across Taipei, New Taipei City and Taoyuan announced yesterday.
