Taiwan Quick Take: Police arrest 14 in Tainan

Police have arrested 14 people who allegedly acted violently against participants of sit-ins in Tainan over the past two days, the Tainan Police Bureau said yesterday. A police spokesman said the 14 men were with supporters of President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) who heckled anti-Chen protesters at a parking lot near the Tainan City Council. The sit-ins were organized by Tainan City Councilor Hsieh Lung-chieh (謝龍介), a Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) member, to support the "Million Voices Against Corruption" campaign in Taipei demanding the ouster of the president. Hsieh had obtained permission from the government to hold sit-ins from 3pm to 10pm from last Tuesday to this Sunday. Physical scuffles took place again last night with at least two people -- one policeman and one pro-Chen supporter -- sustaining head injuries. As of 10pm, seven people had been arrested by police.
