Taiwan Quick Take: Alleged heroin mule caught

A debt-ridden man was arrested on suspicion of smuggling 3.18kg of heroin into the country, law enforcement agents reported yesterday. The agents said the man, a taxi driver surnamed Chu, was in dire financial straits and owed money to loan sharks. A man approached Chu early this month and apparently offered to pay him NT$400,000 (US$12,200) to act as a drug courier. Chu traveled to Vietnam on Sept. 11 and allegedly returned with four packs of heroin hidden in tea cans. Police acting on a tip-off apprehended him immediately upon arrival. The agents urged the public to be aware of the serious punishments imposed for smuggling drugs such as heroin.
