The 2006 Sanyi Woodcarving Festival, one of the country's most important cultural festivals, begins on Aug. 19 and is designed to celebrate the beauty and diversity of woodcarving arts.
Peng Chi-shan (彭基山), director of the Miaoli County Government's Cultural Affairs Bureau, said the festival in the festival in Sanyi Township (三義), now in its 14th year, will showcase more than 200 works by carvers from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and 14 African countries, including Ghana and Mali.
Peng said famous woodcarving masters and craftsmen from those countries have been invited to exhibit their work at the festival, which runs until Aug. 27.
On the opening day, concerts and dance performances showcasing Taiwan's ethnic and cultural diversity will take place at the main exhibition site at Tzuchi parking lot on Shuimei Street, home to numerous handicraft shops, Peng said.
Sanyi is known internationally as the center of the country's woodcarving and woodworking industry.
