About 60 demonstrators waved placards yesterday and shouted slogans slamming Israel's military offensive in Lebanon, as police intervened to keep them away from the Israeli representative office in Taipei.
The demonstrators, from a coalition of workers' rights organizations, called for an immediate halt to Israel's campaign against Hezbollah guerrillas, which began after the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers on the Israeli side of the border with Lebanon on July 12.
Protesters did not attempt to breach a line of about 30 police officers standing outside the entrance to the Xinyi District building where Israel's offices are located.
No arrests were reported.
Demonstration organizer surnamed Tang of the Labor Rights Association said that the group had gathered to protest Israel's actions in Lebanon, which he charged were indiscriminately targeting Lebanese civilians.
"Since July 12 Israel has been bombarding Lebanese targets without distinction, destroying homes, hospitals and other buildings, and killing hundreds of Lebanese," he said. "We are here to protest this intrusion."
