The Presidential Office yesterday said that it would not release pictures of President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) third grandson, who was born on Sunday.

Presidential Office Spokesman David Lee (李南陽) said that the Presidential Office would not post photographs of the third child of the president's only daughter Chen Hsing-yu (陳幸妤) and her husband Chao Chien-ming (趙建銘) on the Presidential Office Web site.

"But we appreciate the public's support and the blessings extended to the first family," he said.

The Presidential Office has previously made public pictures of the president's grandsons, Chao Yi-an (趙翊安), 4, and Chao Yi-ting (趙翊廷), 2, after their births.

Chen Hsing-yu gave birth to a healthy baby boy at National Taiwan University Hospital on Sunday afternoon.

She was accompanied by a bodyguard when she arrived at the hospital in the morning. Her husband has been detained since May 25 on suspicion of insider trading and other offenses.

Chao Chien-ming's lawyer Wellington Ku (顧立雄) yesterday said that he visited his client yesterday afternoon to tell him the news.

Ku said that his visit lasted for 30 minutes and that Chao Chien-ming was calm when he broke the news to him. Chao Chien-ming did not ask to see pictures of his third son, Ku said.

The president and first lady Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍) did not visit their daughter yesterday. Only Twu Shiing-jer (涂醒哲), former director-general of the Department of Health, was admitted to visit Chen Hsin-yu.

Twu, who was holding a gift basket before the visit, was very low key when approached by the media.

Mainland Affairs Council Chairman Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) was spotted at the hospital but said that he was there for a physical check-up.

Former vice premier Wu Rong-i (吳榮義) and former minister of economic affairs Christine Tsung (宗才怡) also showed up at the hospital yesterday.

While Wu said that he had accompanied his wife to see a doctor, Tsung declined to confirm whether or not she was there to visit the president's daughter.

Chief of the hospital's pediatrics department Hsieh Wu-shun (謝武勳) said that Chen Hsing-yu had begun breast feeding and that she would be discharged in a day or two.
