Taiwan Quick Take: Ma vows clean KMT poll

    Sunday, Jul 02, 2006, Page 3

With the Chinese Nationalist Party's (KMT) Central Standing Committee election approaching, party Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) pledged to hold a clean election and take disciplinary action against those involved in bribery. The election falls on July 29, with more than 1,500 party representatives entitled to select the 31 standing committee members from the party's 210 central committee members. The election is a widely observed affair as the central standing committee represents the party's core power structure. Members of the so-called "Ma troops," including KMT Legislator Wu Yu-sheng (吳育昇) and Lai Shyh-bao (賴士葆), were elected last year and helped solidify Ma's leadership.
