Taiwan Quick Take: Fertility rate hits record low

    Monday, Jun 19, 2006, Page 3

The fertility rate fell to a record low last year, official statistics said, sparking concerns that a severe labor shortage could hurt the economy. The rate, which measures the average number of children that a woman gives birth to during her reproductive age, stood at 0.91 last year, down from 0.96 in 2004, according to statistics compiled by the Ministry of the Interior that were released last week. A total of 206,400 babies were born last year, down 5.2 percent from the previous year, the ministry said. Economists have warned that the nation's economy, already hit by an acute labor shortage, might slow down even more if fertility rates continue to fall.
