Taiwan Quick Take: Protesters to hold nude rally

    Sunday, Jun 18, 2006, Page 3

Environmental activists are preparing to hold a nude protest on June 26 at Fulung Beach in Kungliao Township (貢寮), Taipei County, in a bid to save the beach from coastal erosion caused by the construction of a nearby wharf for the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant. Calling on the public to join the event, Ho Chung-hsun (何宗勳), secretary-general of the Taiwan Environmental Protection Union, explained yesterday that the idea behind holding such an alternative protest was that "it is better to be naked than to have nuclear power." Ho indicated that 13 male citizens, ages 25 to 45, have signed up for the protest activity. The construction of the wharf, designed to import heavy machinery for the power plant, has caused extensive damage to the nearby ecology and marine biology, which was formerly home to over 120 kinds of coral and numerous marine creatures, Ho said.
